MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL AUTHORIZING IMPROVEMENTS TO CITY'S REGULATIONS GOVERNING PLUMBING AND FIRE SUPPRESSION CONTRACTOR LICENSES

Remarks by Mayor Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bill before me is Introductory Number 893-A, sponsored by Council Member Spigner. The bill would make a number of improvements to the City's regulations governing plumbing and fire suppression contractor licenses.

Currently, plumbers and fire suppression contractors, individuals licensed to install fire sprinkler systems, are required to renew their licenses every year. In an effort to reduce burdens on the City and on plumbers and contractors, this legislation would require licenses to be renewed every two years.

In return for providing a less frequent renewal timetable, the bill would require plumbers and fire suppression contractors to complete a City-approved, seven-hour retraining course before their licenses are renewed.

I believe that the new license renewal plan combined with the training program requirement will make the City's licensing program for plumbers and fire suppression contractors more efficient and effective.

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
