MAYOR GIULIANI AND SANITATION COMMISSIONER FARRELL
OFFICIATE AT PROMOTION, SWEARING-IN AND
EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION CEREMONY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Sanitation Commissioner Kevin P. Farrell officiated today at a ceremony in the auditorium of One Police Plaza where more than 420 Sanitation employees were either graduated, promoted to higher supervisory ranks, or recognized for their outstanding work performance.

During the ceremony Mayor Giuliani remarked on the importance of the work that Sanitation Workers provide to the residents of New York City. "The good health and well-being of every New Yorker depends on the dedication of the thousands of fine men and women of the Department of Sanitation," the Mayor said. "The quality of life we all enjoy is directly attributed to the hard work you do each and every day. Yours is not an easy job, but it is certainly one of the most important jobs that of any of our uniformed service agencies perform."

"The graduates, promotees and those receiving special recognition awards here today represent the best and brightest of this fine agency," said Commissioner Farrell. "I am proud of the tremendous accomplishments that we, together, have achieved over the last year. I look forward to working with the newest members of the Department, as well as with our newest managers to ensure that the City of New York continues to shine and sparkle like no other."

At today's ceremony, two graduating classes of new Sanitation Workers comprised of 175 men and women, were administered the oath of office. Eighty-eight Sanitation Workers were promoted to Supervisor. In addition, 37 new Sanitation Police Officers, 4 Sergeants, 9 Lieutenants, 2 Captains, 1 Deputy Inspector and 3 Inspectors were sworn-in.

Fourteen newly appointed Sanitation Enforcement Officers were also formally sworn-in today, and 14 General Superintendents Level I, 2 General Superintendents Level II, and 1 General Superintendent Level III were promoted.

In other promotions, David Nati, a twenty-year veteran, was elevated to General Superintendent Level IV, the highest uniformed promotion of the day. Chief Nati joins the Department's elite three-star Chief ranks, and will serve as the Deputy Director of the Bureau of Waste Disposal. Chief Nati is married, has two children and lives on Staten Island.

Also promoted to the Department's executive staff level was Dino Russo who was sworn-in as Assistant Commissioner. Commissioner Russo began his career with the Department eleven years ago as a uniformed Sanitation Worker. In his new assignment, Commissioner Russo will oversee the Sick Leave Management Division.
