MAYOR GIULIANI'S STATEMENT REGARDING THE DECISION OF FIREFIGHTER UNIONS TO CANCEL MEMORIAL SERVICE

"It is a shame that the unions would cancel a memorial service and spread misinformation to the public regarding the City's efforts to recover the remains of those lost in the World Trade Center attack. The City is committed to recovering as many remains as possible, but it is equally important to protect the lives of those courageous individuals helping in the recovery. As we search for remains, we must continue to abide by the recommendations of safety experts and avoid further jeopardizing human life. This dangerous operation must be carried out with discipline and due regard for the health and safety of every one involved -- even if some people have lost perspective and argue for throwing caution to the wind.

The Fire Commissioner will continue to assess the need for an expanded complement of firefighters on the scene and has, for example, doubled the number to ensure that there will be a maximum effort to recover all human remains possible."
