MAYOR GIULIANI AND SANITATION COMMISSIONER FARRELL
OFFICIATE AT GRADUATION AND PROMOTION CEREMONY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Sanitation Commissioner Kevin P. Farrell officiated today at a ceremony in the auditorium of One Police Plaza where 403 Sanitation employees were either graduated or promoted to higher supervisory ranks.

During the ceremony Mayor Giuliani remarked on the importance of the work that Sanitation workers provide to the residents of New York City, especially during the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11th.

"I am very proud of the fine men and women in the Department of Sanitation," the Mayor said. "We all know that the good health and well-being of every New Yorker depends on the dedication that each of you bring to your job. But your recent call to duty in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks on September 11th showed all New Yorkers the true depth of your dedication. Within a few short days after the attacks, Sanitation workers had cleared much of Lower Manhattan of the tons of soot and debris that fell on neighboring streets and sidewalks. Your tireless efforts allowed other essential personnel and service providers to get back into the affected area to begin the long process of healing and rebuilding."

Commissioner Farrell said, "In the days and weeks following the September 11th terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, all members of this Department succeeded in providing essential and necessary support to aid in the recovery of New York City. I would like to commend each and every member of the Department of Sanitation, some of which are being graduated and promoted here today, for their individual and collective roles in restoring normalcy to the people of New York City."

At today's ceremony, two graduating classes of new Sanitation workers comprised of 248 men and women, were administered the oath of office. Ninety Sanitation Workers were promoted to Supervisor and 30 supervisors were promoted to General Superintendents Level I. Also promoted were 19 General Superintendents Level II, 12 General Superintendent Level III and 4 General Superintendents Level IV.
