MAYOR GIULIANI ATTENDS OPENING OF 32ND SEASON OF THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani delivered the curtain speech for the opening of the 32nd season of the New York Philharmonic at the Carlos Moseley Music Pavilion in Central Park this evening, kicking off the annual two week series of free parks performances. Sponsored by Time-Warner, the concerts have become an integral part of summer in New York City.

Joining the Mayor were New York City Parks Department Commissioner Henry Stern, Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Schuyler Chapin, Time Warner CEO Gerald Levin and New York Philharmonic Conductor Eiji Oue.

"Philharmonic in the Park represents New York City at its best," Mayor Giuliani said. "There is no greater place than Central Park for outdoor music and it's hard to beat the music we will hear this evening. The entire program tonight is filled with exciting and colorful music from some of the world's greatest composers. I would like to thank the New York Philharmonic and Time Warner for keeping up this great tradition of free concerts in the park. I would also like to give a special salute to tonight's conductor, Eiji Oue, and a warm welcome as he makes his New York debut. Let the music begin."

Since their start in 1965, more than 12 million people have attended free parks concerts. All concerts begin at 8:00 p.m. and will be accompanied by fireworks provided by Grucci, Inc. Other performances will take place in Central Park, Manhattan on July 22; Miller Field, Staten Island on July 18; Cunningham Park, Queens on July 19; Westchester Community College, Westchester on July 20; Prospect Park, Brooklyn on July 23; Van Cortland Park, Bronx on July 24 and Heckscher State Park, Suffolk County on July 27.
