MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS COLOMBIAN INDEPENDENCE WEEK
Acknowledges Contributions of Colombians to the City of New York

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani proclaimed Colombian Independence Week in New York City and acknowledged the many contributions of Colombians to the City of New York. The proclamation was presented to members of the Colombian Civic Center by Deputy Mayor Ninfa Segarra during a ceremony in City Hall's Public Hearing Chamber today.

The Mayoral proclamation highlights the significant contributions Colombian New Yorkers make to every facet of New York life.

The Colombian Civic Center, under the leadership of Rafael Castelar and dedicated members of its board of directors, plays an important role in the annual celebration of Colombia's cultural heritage.

"Colombian New Yorkers make an outstanding contribution to the civic, economic, social and cultural life of our City," said Mayor Giuliani. "Today, all New Yorkers join our neighbors of Colombian descent to celebrate this important anniversary."

On July 20, 1810, the people of Colombia began a long struggle for independence. Under the leadership of Simon Bolivar, the great South American liberator, final victory was won at the battle of Boyaca on August 7, 1819.

"On behalf of the Colombian community, I thank Mayor Giuliani for his support and recognition," said Mr. Castelar. "We will continue our efforts to be of service to the community and help improve the quality of life in the City."

The Colombian Civic Center, founded in 1978, is sponsoring a series of commemorative events which culminate with the annual Colombian Independence Festival at Flushing Meadow Park in Queens.
