MAYOR UNVEILS NEW STOPLIGHT IN BROOKLYN

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani unveiled a new traffic light at Avenue L and East 8th Street in Flatbush, Brooklyn this morning. The Mayor was joined by Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Christopher Lynn, Community Assistance Unit (CAU) Commissioner Rosemarie O’Keefe, City Councilman Noach Dear, and prominent members of the community for the ceremony.

“We will not tolerate speeding cars, particularly in an area where children play and elderly New Yorkers stroll and shop,” Mayor Giuliani said. “This stop- light will help put an end to reckless driving immediately and make this intersection a safer place.

“I would like to thank Councilman Dear for his efforts on behalf of this community and for working collaboratively with the City’s Transportation Department and the Mayor’s Community Assistance Unit to make this unveiling a reality,” the Mayor concluded.

The intersection at Avenue L and East 8th Street, called the “speedway” by local residents, has been the scene of many accidents -- some fatal -- over the years. Through the combined efforts of the Mayor, City Councilman Dear, Rabbi Shalom Noach Landau, Rabbi Aaron Landau, Rabbi Yechezkel Landau and Community Board 12, the stoplight was installed and has been operating since July 15, 1996.
