"We're showing that precinct councils, community groups, business people, members of the clergy, public officials, police officers, youngsters and parents are all united in the fight for safer streets and communities. Thanks to cooperation between the greatest people in the world and the greatest police department in the world, New York City is now the safest large city in America."
"The New York City Police Department is proud of its contribution to the 13th Annual National Night Out Against Crime," Commissioner Safir said. "Tonight is an opportunity for New Yorkers to come together and send a very clear message, in one voice to criminals that concerned citizens, community groups and civilian observation patrols are working hand and hand with the Department to take back our streets, to take back our neighborhoods and to show that working together we will continue to significantly reduce crime and the fear of crime in our cities."
The Mayor and Commissioner Safir, joined by State Senator Alton Waldon, Assemblyman Mark Weprin, Assemblywoman Barbara Clarke, Queens Borough President Claire Shulman, Councilmember Tom White, Councilmember Juanita Watkins and Patrol Borough Queens South Chief Jules Martin enjoyed activities that included a chorale performance and double dutch rope jumping demonstrations.
Neighborhoods throughout New York City will host a variety of community sponsored crime-prevention events and outdoor activities. The National Night Out Against Crime is designed to generate interest and participation in local anti-crime programs, to strengthen neighborhood and NYPD partnerships and to demonstrate that neighborhoods are determined to help in the fight against crime.
