MAYOR GIULIANI PARTICIPATES IN THE 13th NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AGAINST CRIME FESTIVITIES

(Staten Island) - Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Police Commissioner Howard Safir today joined Staten Island neighborhood and community leaders participating in "National Night Out Against Crime" festivities at Corporal Thompson Park in West Brighton. The "13th National Night Out Against Crime" is a crime prevention event sponsored by the New York City Police Department in conjunction with the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). The Mayor and Commissioner Safir were joined by Congresswoman Susan Molinari, Assemblywoman Elizabeth Connelly, Staten Island Borough President Guy Molinari, Council Member Jerome O'Donovan, Staten Island Borough Chief Eugene Devlin and Commanding Officer of the 120 Precinct Captain Kathleen Kearns.

"Tonight, in communities from coast to coast, millions of Americans like us are getting together to do something about crime," Mayor Giuliani said. "We're showing that precinct councils, community groups, business people, members of the clergy, public officials, police officers, youngsters and parents are all united in the fight for safer streets and communities. Thanks to cooperation between the greatest people in the world and the greatest police department in the world, New York City is now the safest large city in America."

"The New York City Police Department is proud of its contribution to the 13th Annual National Night Out Against Crime," Commissioner Safir said. "Tonight is an opportunity for New Yorkers to come together and send a very clear message, in one voice to criminals that concerned citizens, community groups and civilian observation patrols are working hand and hand with the Department to take back our streets, to take back our neighborhoods and to show that working together we will continue to significantly reduce crime and the fear of crime in our cities."

Neighborhoods throughout New York City will host a variety of community sponsored crime-prevention events and outdoor activities. The National Night Out Against Crime is designed to generate interest and participation in local anti-crime programs, to strengthen neighborhood and NYPD partnerships and to demonstrate that neighborhoods are determined to help in the fight against crime.

As part of the Citywide celebration of National Night Out Against Crime, the Mayor and Commissioner Safir visited five communities in each of the five boroughs. The visit to Corporal Thompson Park was their third stop of the evening. Other stops included visits to:
