MAYOR GIULIANI CELEBRATES THE 40th ANNIVERSARY OF THE CONFERENCE OF PRESIDENTS OF MAJOR AMERICAN JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani hosted a reception this evening at Gracie Mansion in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. The Mayor was joined by Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Conference Chairman Leon Levy, Conference Executive Vice Chairman Malcolm Hoenlein and all former Presidents of the Conference, including Rabbi Herschel Shacter, Rabbi Israel Miller, Mr. Howard Squadron, Mr. Julius Berman, Mr. Kenneth Bialkin and Mr. Lester Pollack.

"As the City with the largest Jewish population in the world, New York has a special relationship with Israel that I've worked hard to strengthen," said Mayor Giuliani. "This relationship includes strong ties with Mayor Olmert of Jerusalem, Mayor Milo of Tel Aviv and Prime Minister Netanyahu."

"Last spring during the terrorist attacks, I visited Israel to show New York City's solidarity with the Israeli people. Because of my commitment to and belief in solidarity, I have great admiration for all that the Conference of Presidents has accomplished," the Mayor concluded.

The Conference is a pre-eminent national confederation of 54 Jewish organizations whose mission is to advocate on behalf of important issues concerning Israel. The Conference has been at the forefront of maintaining diplomacy during times of war and times of peace and has also acted as an important liaison between Israel and the United States for the past 40 years.
