MAYOR GIULIANI RENAMES BROOKLYN STREET IN MEMORY OF LAWRENCE BROCHHAUSEN

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today renamed Elm Place in Downtown Brooklyn as Lawrence Brochhausen Place in memory of the late Deputy Commissioner for Operations of the New York City Department of Finance. The Mayor was joined at a ceremony on Elm Place between Livingston and Fulton Streets by Finance Commissioner Fred Cerullo and Mr. Brochhausen's widow, Judy, and eldest daughter, Christine.

On May 12, 1994, Lawrence Brochhausen, 46, then Deputy Commissioner for Operations of the Finance Department, collapsed and died of a heart attack en route to his office at 25 Elm Place in Brooklyn.

"Larry Brochhausen was a true leader who was respected and admired by all of his colleagues," Mayor Giuliani said. "In addition to being a loving father and husband, he initiated some important reforms in City services. He implemented taxpayer friendly real property related mailings and devised a procedure for streamlining the senior citizen rent increase / abatement program which assists seniors in housing costs. Under his direction, the Department of Finance also developed a new state of art computer system to manage taxpayer accounts. I know this sign will be a fitting tribute to a man who served his family and his City."

Mr. Brochhausen was born and raised in Queens and settled with his wife Judy in Staten Island where he was active in his church, the Cub Scouts and the Little League. He is survived by his wife Judy, and two children from a previous marriage, Christine and Justin.
