MAYOR GIULIANI UNVEILS NEW TRAFFIC LIGHT AT DANGEROUS INTERSECTION IN HILLCREST, QUEENS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani this morning unveiled a new traffic light at the intersection of 73rd Avenue and 168th Street in the Hillcrest section of Queens. Joining the Mayor at a ceremony were Queens Borough President Claire Schulman, Assemblywoman Nettie Mayerson, Councilman Mort Povman, Department of Transportation Commissioner Chris Lynn and Chief Jules Martin of the New York City Police Department.

The new traffic signal, which actually went into operation in late July, represents the 165th new light that the City's Department of Transportation has installed under the Mayor's direction.

"Over the past year, there have been at least six preventable accidents at this dangerous intersection," Mayor Giuliani said. "Now with this new light, people and cars will be able to navigate much more safely. I want to thank the community for brining this situation to our attention, especially the 168th Street Block Association, its president Herbert Perlman and Alvin Warshaviak, the Chairman of Community Board 8."
