MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS "STEUBEN PARADE DAY"
Saluting the 39th Annual Celebration of the German American Parade

City Hall - In a salute to New York's German American community, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani declared September 21, 1996, as the "Steuben Parade Day" in New York City. The Mayor presented a proclamation to William Hetzler, General Chairman of the German American Steuben Day Parade during a ceremony held at City Hall Plaza today. Also joining the Mayor were Department for the Aging Commissioner Herbert Stupp and other distinguished members of the German American community.

The Steuben Day Parade, which celebrates the proud history of German immigration to America, will be held tomorrow along Fifth Avenue culminating a week-long celebration of German American events. Today's proclamation ceremony featured colorful bands and dancing groups who performed for the enjoyment of hundreds of spectators at City Hall Plaza.

"This ceremony and tomorrow's parade remind us that German-American traditions and organizations are a vital and influential part of our City and nation," said Mayor Giuliani. "New York City is proud to be the home to this large and dynamic community that has made vital contributions to all areas of our City."

The annual parade is named after General Frederick Wilhem von Steuben, a Prussian army officer who volunteered his services to General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. He was made Inspector General of the Continental Army and served with great distinction. Following the war, General von Steuben was elected to become an American Citizen.
