Release #583-96
Contact: Colleen Roche (212) 788-2958
Richard J. Schwartz, Senior Advisor to the Mayor, issued the following
statement today concerning Governor George Pataki's Welfare Reform Plan:
"The Governor is proposing major changes to the State's welfare system.
We are looking very carefully at this ambitious program and will fully assess its
fiscal impact on the City.
"By implementing `NYC Way,' which includes the nation's largest workfare
program, the City has already achieved more than $150 million in savings and
expects to save an additional $100 million by June 1997. New York State
receives an equal savings as a direct result of the City's aggressive welfare
reform program. We must be assured that any state plan gives New York City
full credit for the savings generated by the historic reforms we have already
implemented."
