MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS CONSULAR CORPS DAY AT GRACIE MANSION RECEPTION FOR FOREIGN CONSULS
ACCREDITED IN NEW YORK CITY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani tonight proclaimed November 12, 1996 as Consular Corps Day at a Gracie Mansion reception in honor of the one hundred consuls general accredited in New York City. At the ceremony, the Mayor was joined by Livia Sylva, New York City Commissioner for the United Nations and Consular Corps and other senior administration officials.

Mayor Giuliani said, "I'm pleased to recognize the vital importance of the consular corps to the economic, social and commercial life of New York City. The consulates play a very important role promoting economic and cultural ties between their native countries and New York City. Consulates are a primary arm for increased international trade, overseeing the practical matters of business and international relations, investment and tourism promotion, legal and visa services and cultural and public affairs."

"New York City has the largest consular corps in the world. This group of diplomats and their consular organizations contribute a great deal to New York's international leadership and provide our City with an invaluable edge in competing for international trade. The consular corps' dedication and hard work helps the large population of visitors and foreign-born residentsk in New York City, the Capital of the World, keep in touch with their home countries," added Mayor Giuliani.
