MAYOR GIULIANI ATTENDS DINNER
TO BENEFIT THE AMERICAN PARALYSIS ASSOCIATION

Honors Christopher Reeve For His "Courage, Determination, Optimism"

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani tonight attended and delivered remarks at "A Magical Evening" to Benefit the American Paralysis Association at The Waldorf-Astoria. Also attending the fundraiser were the evening's honoree, actor Christopher Reeve, his wife, Dana Reeve, actress Meryl Streep, KMart Chairman Floyd Hall and Charlotte and Henry Stifel, founders of the American Paralysis Association (APA).

"The success of the American Paralysis Association is about extraordinary people taking a tragedy and turning it into a real success story -- for themselves, for their family and for the estimated 250,000 victims of spinal cord injuries currently living in the United States," Mayor Giuliani said.

"The courage, determination and optimism with which Christopher Reeve approached his injury and recovery have truly been an inspiration to all of us," the Mayor continued. "I think that a lot of his fans no longer idolize Superman, but have come to idolize the actor himself as a real man who possesses the fortitude and bravery of a super hero."

The Mayor also applauded the efforts of the Stifel family as "the driving force behind the Association and bringing so much hope to so many people living with paralysis."

The APA is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage and support research to find a cure for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury and other central nervous system disorders. Since its founding in 1982, APA has invested more than $11 million world wide in research activities to find a cure.
