MAYOR GIULIANI HONORS MEMORY OF DETECTIVE WILLIAM T. GUNN
RENAMES STREET AND PROCLAIMS DAY IN TRIBUTE OF HIS HEROISM

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani saluted the memory and bravery and unrivaled heroism of Detective William T. Gunn, one of New York's City's finest who sacrificed his life in the line of duty, by renaming a section of Snyder Avenue in Brooklyn as "Detective William Gunn Place" and proclaiming a day in his honor.

The Mayor was joined at the ceremony by Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden, Police Commissioner Howard Safir, Transportation Commissioner Christopher Lynn, and members of the Gunn family including his wife Lorie Gunn and his daughter Jennifer.

"Billy Gunn typified the courage, dedication and heart of the Police Department. He loved being a police officer because he believed he could make a difference, and he did, " said Mayor Giuliani. "Billy was sensitive, honest and kind and changed so many lives for the better with his courage and compassion. He was a loving husband, a proud father and a trusted friend and colleague."

"He represented the best of all men and women who risk their lives in the day-in, day-out struggle to protect the well-being and safety of their fellow New Yorkers," the Mayor continued. "His courage, kindness dignity and strength will never be forgotten."

Detective Gunn was shot in the line of duty on January 20, 1989 as he and a team of detectives attempted to apprehend a suspect wanted for homicide. He was taken to Kings County Hospital where he underwent surgery. Detective Gunn lay in a coma for four years, succumbing to his wounds on November 27, 1992. Because of his bravery and courage, Detective Gunn was presented with the Department's highest award, the Medal of Honor, while in the hospital.

Detective Gunn was appointed to the New York City Police Department on January 26, 1982. He was 28 years old at the time of the shooting.
