MAYOR GIULIANI VISITS CITY WORKERS
AND VOLUNTEERS TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today visited City workers and other volunteers throughout the five boroughs to thank them for their service to New Yorkers. The Mayor also took the opportunity to highlight the decrease in the City's crime rate, specifically a murder rate which has dropped below 1,000 for the first time since 1968.

As part of his New Year's tour, the Mayor visited six locations: the Hatzolah Volunteer Ambulance Corps in Brooklyn, the Staten Island Ferry Terminal in Staten Island, the 44th Precinct in the Bronx, the Rikers Island Correctional Facility, Engine Company 53 and Ladder Company 43 in Manhattan, and an Emergency Medical Services Station at Metropolitan Hospital in Manhattan. At each location, the Mayor met with uniformed personnel and volunteers, thanked them for a job well done and brought them cookies.

"As we begin the New Year, the City's crime rate is at its lowest level since the 1960's," Mayor Giuliani said. "Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers have not been victimized and are living healthier and happier lives today because of the fine work of the Police Department, Correction Department, the Courts and Prosecutors. Day in and day out, members of our Departments of Transportation and Sanitation perform vital tasks and keep our City moving and clean -- jobs that many of us take for granted. And finally, many City workers, like the brave members of the Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services, put their lives on the line to insure that New Yorkers live in safety and in good health.

"While New York City is achieving historic crime declines, it has also experienced a year of record tourism. Businesses and jobs are returning to New York. All of these factors contribute to New York's position as the world's premiere city. People, once again, have the sense that New York City is back.

The Mayor concluded, "The City also has an exceptional corps of volunteers who work throughout the year to insure that New York's elderly, hungry and afflicted are cared for. From manning the pots and pans of a soup kitchen, to helping citizens with medical emergencies, New York City volunteers perform an invaluable service and I join other New Yorkers in saluting their efforts this New Year's Day."

The Mayor wished all New Yorkers a happy and healthy New Year.
