MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES SPECIAL ELECTION FOR THE 17th COUNCILMANIC DISTRICT IN THE BRONX

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today announced that a Special Election will be held on Tuesday, February 18, 1997, to fill the vacant seat in the 17th Councilmanic District in the Bronx, as provided under the City Charter. The vacancy was created by the resignation of former New York City Council Member David Rosado, effective at midnight December 31, 1996.

The winner of the Special Election will serve until December 31, 1997, the expiration of the term. A general election for the seat will be held in November 1997.

Mayor Giuliani said. "I urge voters in the 17th Councilmanic District in the Bronx to learn about the candidates and the issues in this special election, and to go to the polls on February 18."

Candidates who choose to run in the Special Election have the option of joining the New York City Campaign Finance Program. In exchange for their agreement to abide by the Program's contribution and spending limits, public disclosure and other requirements, candidates who join the voluntary program may receive up to $40,000 in public funds to help finance their special election campaigns.

Candidates who join the Campaign Finance Program for the Special Election must agree to limit the size of contributions they accept per contributor (individual or organization), limit the amount of money they spend and also to disclose to the public, in reports filed periodically with the Campaign Finance Board, the details of their campaign finances.

Candidates who wish to join the Program must file the required certification forms with the Campaign Finance Board not later than January 10, 1997. For more information, please contact Randi Rothstein of the Campaign Finance Board's Candidate Services Unit at (212) 306-7131.
