MAYOR GIULIANI SALUTES NEW YORK CITY WOMEN AS HE PROCLAIMS MARCH AS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH

Inaugurates "Women Shaping New York," An Exhibit Highlighting Women Cabinet Members In New York City Government

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today saluted New York City women and proclaimed March as Women's History Month. Joining the Mayor at the kick off ceremony for Women Shaping New York, an exhibit highlighting the women cabinet members in his administration, were Rudy Washington, Deputy Mayor for Community Development and Business Services, Amalia Betanzos, Chair of the Commission on the Status of Women, and women members of his cabinet.

The theme for this year's observance of Women's History Month is "A Long and Fine Tradition of Community Leadership". The Commission on the Status of Women has compiled a calendar listing 193 events throughout the City during the month of March that include film screenings, seminars, workshops, dramatic readings and exhibits to recognize women's leadership in all areas of our society.

"For centuries, women have played a pivotal role in shaping New York City," said Mayor Giuliani. "They have been leaders in fighting for the right to vote, ending child labor, improving working conditions, feeding the hungry, and caring for orphans, abused children, the ailing and the elderly.

"In our century, women have become leaders in all professional fields and women business owners have revitalized our neighborhoods by providing needed goods and services as well as thousands of jobs. Their contributions to the national, state and city governments have been tremendous. And I am proud to recognize 22 women in my cabinet who work tirelessly to fulfill this administration's standards of opportunity, prosperity, safety and excellence in education for all New Yorkers. They honor our long-standing tradition of service to this great City," the Mayor concluded.

The Women Shaping New York exhibit will be open to the public from 9 AM to 5 PM, starting on March 6 through March 26 at: 52 Chambers Street in Manhattan. A calendar of all the events commemorating Women's History Month is available free of charge by calling the Commission on the Status of Women at: (212) 788-2738.
