MAYOR GIULIANI ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING POLICE COMMISSIONER SAFIR'S SUCCESSFUL SURGERY

"Police Commissioner Howard Safir underwent cardiac tests this morning which indicated that it would be appropriate for him to have bypass surgery sometime in the future. Rather than wait, the Police Commissioner elected to undergo the necessary surgery this afternoon so that he could return to work as soon as possible.

"Police Commissioner Safir is in excellent physical condition and is expected to make a full and complete recovery. I join all New Yorkers in wishing Howard Safir a speedy and complete recovery. We expect to see the Police Commissioner rollerblading in Central Park in the very near future.

"During this recovery period, First Deputy Police Commissioner Tosano Simonetti will be in charge of the day to day management of the Police Department."
