MAYOR GIULIANI CELEBRATES 1,000TH PERFORMANCE OF WQXR'S McGRAW-HILL YOUNG ARTISTS SHOWCASE

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today helped observe the 1,000th broadcast of WQXR's McGraw-Hill Young Artists Showcase 1,000th performance. Joining the Mayor during the broadcast were Harold McGraw the 3rd, President and Chief Operating Officer of McGraw-Hill Companies, and Robert Sherman, Senior Consultant and Broadcaster at WQXR.

In recognition of the anniversary, Mayor Giuliani proclaimed Tuesday, March 18, 1997 as "The McGraw-Hill Companies' Young Artists Showcase Day" in New York City.

"I am delighted to be here today to celebrate the 1,00th broadcast of The McGraw-Hill Young Artists Showcase," said Mayor Giuliani. "Over the course of 20 years, this program has featured more than 2,000 promising young musicians, many of whom have gone on to successful international careers, including David Bilger, Carter Brey, Ani and Ida Kavafian, Emanuel Ax, and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg.

"For more than a century, the McGraw-Hill Companies have remained strong supporters of education and the arts in New York City," the Mayor added. "In doing so, they have played an active role in improving the quality of life for many young New Yorkers.

"My administration also recognizes the important role that an arts education has for the children of our City. In fact, I am working with the Board of Education, and the private sector to raise $75 million to restore arts education in public schools," concluded the Mayor. The special program celebrating the 1,000th broadcast of the Young Artists Showcase, hosted by Robert Sherman, will feature performances by Pianist Akira Eguchi, Cellist Allison Eldredge and Violinist Chee-Yun. The three award winning artists will also perform an original score titled "Gala 1000," created specially for the April 2,1997 anniversary event. The never-heard-before piece was composed by world-renowned Cellist and Composer Seymour Barab.

The McGraw-Hill Companies have been the sole sponsors of the on-air performance of the Young Artists Showcase series, which airs every Wednesday on WQXR at 9:05 PM.
