MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS APRIL MARCH OF DIMES
WALKAMERICA MONTH IN NEW YORK

Encourages All New Yorkers to Participate in the April 27th Event

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed April as March of Dimes WalkAmerica Day in New York City in honor of the Greater New York March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation's 27th Annual WalkAmerica in Manhattan and Staten Island.

The Mayor was joined by Staten Island Borough President Guy Molinari, Lawrence Aiken, Chairman of the Board of the March of Dimes, Dr. Esther Dyer, Executive Director for the March of Dimes, and the 1997 March of Dimes National Ambassador five-year-old Cody Dillon Groce.

"In our City each year approximately 5,000 babies are born with birth defects," Mayor Giuliani said. "About 1,200 babies die before they reach their first birthdays. Some of the babies will have life-long disabilities, and some will have limited life expectancy. Yet many birth defects can be prevented. I applaud the work of the Greater New York March of Dimes and encourage all New Yorkers to take part in the 27th Annual WalkAmerica on April 27. I also would like to salute March of Dimes National Ambassador Cody Dillon. He is a living symbol of the March of Dimes heroic efforts on behalf of all children."

The 27th Annual WalkAmerica will take place on April 27, 1997. In Manhattan the 10 mile route commences and concludes at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park. In Staten Island the route starts and ends at the Staten Island Mall.

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health organization whose mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects and infant mortality. Through its Campaign for Healthier Babies, the March of Dimes funds programs for research, community service and education. Seventy-eight cents of every donated dollar goes into research and programs. The March of Dimes Foundation is currently investing almost $1.3 million to medical institutions in the New York Area so that they can continue vital research into treatments and cures for birth defects and low birth weights.
