DEPUTY MAYOR NINFA SEGARRA RECEIVES THE HISPANIC MAGAZINE 1997 LATINA EXCELLENCE AWARD IN EDUCATION

New York City Deputy Mayor for Education and Human Services Ninfa Segarra today received Hispanic Magazine's 1997 Latina Excellence Award in Education. Joining the Deputy Mayor during the ceremony at the St. Regis Hotel were Alfredo J. Estrada, Editor and Publisher of Hispanic Magazine, Ruth Gonz les, National Advertising Director of Moderna, the Latina Magazine, and other award recipients.

The Latina Excellence Awards honor Hispanic-American women who have made outstanding contributions in the areas of Education, Family, Lifetime Achievement, Health and Science, Leadership, Fashion, Youth Empowerment, Youth Sports and the Corporate Sector.

"I am deeply honored to receive this award, particularly for my work in education," said Deputy Mayor Segarra. "As the mother of two children in New York City's public school system, I know first hand that what they experience on a daily basis in their classrooms is shaping their future.

"I am proud to work in an administration that understands the needs of our children and is committed to raising education standards so our children are prepared to enter the job market. We are working closely with Chancellor Rudy Crew to reduce illiteracy, restore arts education, provide children with computer technology and up-to-date books, increase seating capacity in the classrooms and make schools safer. I thank Hispanic Magazine for making this award possible. In doing so, they recognize our commitment to education," concluded the Deputy Mayor.
