MAYOR GIULIANI AND GARTH BROOKS ANNOUNCE
FREE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Parks Commissioner Henry J. Stern joined world renowned EMI-Capitol Music recording artist Garth Brooks to announce that Brooks will bring his sold-out concert tour, the biggest-selling tour of 1996, to Central Park’s North Meadow for a free concert on Thursday, August 7 at 8:00 PM.

"I am thrilled that Garth Brooks will be giving New Yorkers the opportunity to enjoy his extraordinary music in the beautiful setting of Central Park," said Mayor Giuliani. "Events like this bolster New York City’s position as the capital of music and show our City in a positive light throughout the world." The Central Park concert is offered in cooperation with EMI-Capitol Music Group and the Parks Department and will be televised live nationwide by Home Box Office (HBO). Also in attendance at the announcement were Jeff Bewkes, HBO Chairman and CEO and Charles Koppelman, Chairman and CEO, Capitol Music Group North America. Brooks is the biggest-selling recording artist in U.S. music history. His show will follow in the great tradition of Central Park’s free concerts, which have drawn millions of people to witness performances by artists such as Placido Domingo, Simon & Garfunkel, Barbara Streisand, Elton John and Luciano Pavarotti.

Brooks’ nine discs have accounted for an overwhelming 62 million in total sales, second only to the Beatles in overall domestic sales. He has been showered with accolades, among them a Grammy Award, 11 American Music Awards, nine Country Music Association Awards, 14 Academy of Country Music Awards, 5 World Music Awards and 8 People’s Choice Awards. Brooks in the midst of a three-year tour that has sold out multiple shows in each city. The Central Park concert is his only scheduled New York City performance.
