The Mayor was joined by Cathleen Black, President of Hearst Magazines; Glenda Bailey, Editor-in-Chief of Marie Claire; and Peg Farrell, Publisher of Marie Claire.
"New York City has always been known as a center of creative energy and vitality, and now we are also reclaiming our status as the world's best place to do business," said Mayor Giuliani. "In making our City safer and cleaner than it's been in decades, and enacting more tax reductions than in the prior 18 years combined, we have worked together to attract the major leaders in the fashion and cosmetic industries.
"These industries play a critical role in the well-being of our economy. At the present, there are over 65,000 fashion-related merchandising jobs in New York and more than 85,000 fashion-related manufacturing jobs. In addition, our City's cosmetic firms employ more than 5,000 people and represent over one- third of the state's cosmetic industry jobs. Because these businesses comprise a substantial portion of our economy, the City has worked very hard to maintain and develop them," concluded the Mayor.
Among the companies in the cosmetic and fashion industry that have chosen to do business in New York City are Avon Products, Maybelline, Revlon, Clairol, Estee Lauder, Clinique, Valentino, Prada, Giorgio Armani and Versace.
