MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES TENTATIVE LABOR ACCORD WITH UNIFORMED FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Kevin Gallagher, President of the Uniformed Firefighters Association, today announced that a tentative settlement has been reached with the 8,800 member Uniformed Firefighters Association for a successor collective bargaining agreement. The settlement is subject to the union's ratification process and reflects an agreement consistent with the pattern established in all earlier citywide civilian settlements reached in this round of bargaining, including the agreement with the Municipal Coalition of Unions and the United Federation of Teachers.

The package includes a restoration of benefits that had been diminished or lost in prior arbitration funded by internal savings mechanisms.

"The agreement reflects the City's continuing commitment to fiscal prudence and the union's commitment to ensure fair treatment and compensation for its members," Mayor Giuliani said. "I want to congratulate President Gallagher. Today's agreement represents a milestone in the history of negotiations between the parties reached through old-fashioned bargaining.
