MAYOR GIULIANI HOSTS GRACIE MANSION RECEPTION FOR GREATER HARLEM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani tonight hosted a Gracie Mansion reception for the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and presented "milestone" awards to seven individuals, companies and organizations.

Joining the Mayor were Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington and President of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce Lloyd Williams. Also in attendance were business and community leaders from Harlem, elected officials and sponsors.

"Tonight we celebrate the economic resurgence of the Harlem community and salute the positive role that the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce has played in it," Mayor Giuliani said. "The City will continue to work closely with Lloyd Williams and his colleagues at the Greater Harlem Chamber. We'll also continue to reduce crime, improve the quality of life and increase business and job opportunities for the people of Harlem."

Mayor Giuliani presented "milestone" awards to the Ruth Williams Dance School, television journalist John Johnson, former NBA player Nate "Tiny" Archibald, Daily News cartoonist/columnist Bill Gallo and HRH Construction Corporation. The JVC Jazz Festival received a 25th Anniversary Award and the Cork and Bottle Club received a 60th Anniversary Award.

The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce created Harlem Week 20 years ago in an effort to revitalize the world famous community. The Chamber was motivated by the desire to overcome hard economic times and celebrate the rich cultural and historic wealth of the community. This summer Harlem Week will run from August 1st to the 17th.
