MAYOR GIULIANI PRESENTS HISTORIC NEW YORK CITY BUSINESS AWARD TO KPMG PEAT MARWICK

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani tonight presented the Museum of the City of New York's 1997 Historic New York City Business Award to KPMG Peat Marwick LLP. The award was accepted by KPMG Chairman Steven G. Butler during a fundraising reception at the Museum on 103rd Street and Fifth Avenue.

"I'm proud to join you this evening to present The Historic New York City Business Award to a company that has helped in making New York the business Capital of the World," Mayor Giuliani said. "During the past century, as our City has grown and developed into the world's capital of business and finance, KPMG Peat Marwick has grown into one of the world's largest accounting firms. KPMG has always maintained a strong commitment to its hometown, giving back to the communities and neighborhoods. This company shares a wonderful, proud history with the people of this City."

Also in attendance were President of the Museum of the City of New York David Clapp, Executive Director of the MCNY Robert MacDonald, and the two chairs of the event, CEO of Bankers Trust Frank Newman and CEO of Travelers Group Sanford Weill.

The Historic New York City Business Award is given annually by the Museum of the City of New York in recognition of a leading company that has made significant contributions to the betterment of the City and its people. The recipient of the award must have maintained the highest standard of social responsibility and integrity for more than 50 years.

KPMG Peat Marwick LLP has shown leadership in the community, tradition in service and an ongoing commitment to education. In the early 1980's, the City sought KPMG's assistance in preparing for its return to the public debt market. In 1986, the firm and the City joined forces to create the New York City Water Finance Authority. KPMG also serves as auditors for the New York City Health & Hospitals Corporation, the Housing Development Corporation and the Board of Education.

The Museum of the City of New York is a not-for-profit educational agency established in 1923 to collect, preserve and present original material related to the history of New York City.
