"The Asian-Pacific community has brought wonderful and diverse cultures, religions, languages and institutions to New York City, contributing to the amazing chorus of cultures here in the 'Capital of the World,'" Mayor Giuliani said. "Our immigrant communities are constantly revitalizing the City, adding new ideas, energy and talent. The Asian-Pacific community is no exception. So it is with great honor that I present this proclamation declaring May Asian-Pacific Heritage Month."
"The Pan Asian Repertory theater is exactly the type of innovative institution that proves that our diversity is our strength," the Mayor added. "Since Ms. Chang founded the theater in 1977, it has infused the City with fresh creative energy, employed Asian-American dramatic artists and taught all New Yorkers more about the rich heritage of Asian-Americans."
Joining the Mayor were Department of Aging Commissioner Herb Stupp, Chairman of the Board of Standards and Appeals James Chin, honoree Tisa Chang and Director of Community Relations for AT&T Susan Dessel. Tonight's celebration was sponsored by AT&T.
Started on May 7, 1980 by President Jimmy Carter, Asian-Pacific American Month is an opportunity to applaud the diversity of the distinct cultures of Asian Americans in New York City.
