MAYOR GIULIANI HONORS NEW YORK CITY SPORTS BROADCASTER SAL MARCHIANO

Sports Anchor Is Celebrating His 30th Year on Television

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today congratulated television sportscaster Sal Marchiano on his 30th anniversary as a New York City sportscaster -- making him the senior sports reporter in town. The Mayor, joined by Marchiano's family, friends and broadcast colleagues, presented the sports anchor with an anniversary cake and proclaimed today Sal Marchiano Day in New York City.

"For three decades, Sal Marchiano has seen it all and done it all, reporting first-hand on the championship victories of the Yankees, Knicks, Jets, Nets, Mets, and Rangers," Mayor Giuliani said. "From Broadway Joe Namath and The Greatest of All Time Muhammad Ali to Patrick Ewing and Bernie Williams, his interviews with legendary sports figures and his straight talking, no-nonsense style have earned him the respect and admiration of fans, colleagues and competitors alike.

"Throughout his celebrated career, he has remained right here in New York City -- the Sports Capital of the World. So, in honor of this great New Yorker and his 30 years as a hometown sports reporter, it is my pleasure to proclaim today Sal Marchiano Day in New York City. I should also add that all New Yorkers are looking forward to seeing Sal this October, as he covers yet another Yankees victory parade through the Canyon of Heroes," the Mayor concluded.

Sal Marchiano, a veteran of three decades of sports broadcasting, is currently the weeknight sports anchor of "The WB11 News at Ten." He joined the WB11 newsteam on April 2, 1994.

In 1967, Marchiano began his broadcast career as a sportscaster for WCBS-TV Channel 2. From 1970 to 1979, he appeared on WABC-TV Channel 7, where he did play-by-play for Major League Baseball, prime-time boxing and college football. He also contributed sport reports to the co-owned ABC Radio Network.

After a brief return stint at WCBS-TV, Marchiano joined ESPN in 1980, where he hosted "Top Rank Boxing" and "Sports Forum." From 1984 to 1994, Marchiano was weekend sportscaster for WNBC-TV Channel 4 and a contributor to weekday newscasts. He has also hosted several highly successful special sports programs including "Back on Track: Giants/Jets in 1988," "Countdown to Kickoff 1987," "On to the Playoffs: The Mets' Second Season," and "The Future Is Now: A Look at the Mets and Yankees," both in 1986.

Sal Marchiano was born in Brooklyn, educated at Fordham University and raised an avid Dodgers fan.
