MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS JUNE 1-JUNE 8 NEIGHBORHOOD WEEK IN NEW YORK CITY

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani tonight hosted a Gracie Mansion reception in honor of Neighborhood Week and proclaimed June 1 through June 8 as Neighborhood Week in New York City. Osborn Elliot, Chair of the Citizens Committee of New York City, accepted the proclamation from the Mayor on behalf of communities and civic organizations throughout the City. With events scheduled in all five boroughs, Neighborhood Week 1997 is the single largest community service program in the history of the City.

"New York is the greatest City in the world, but it is also 413 small towns," said Mayor Giuliani. "Neighborhood Week gives seven and one-half million New Yorkers wonderful opportunities to make their communities and neighborhoods more attractive and safer, to help neighbors in need, to establish friendships and to make our City even better."

"Once again, New York City leads the nation in crime decline," Mayor Giuliani continued. "As the FBI reported, New York City is the safest large city in America. Our achievement is due to the exceptional work of New York City Police Officers, Correction Officers, Probation Officers, other important members of the law enforcement community and, most importantly, the neighborhood groups that have worked diligently to take back the streets of New York City."

Last weekend, the FBI released new crime statistics showing a three percent nationwide drop in crime and a staggering 14 percent drop in crime in New York City. This new decline in crime makes New York City the safest large city in the country, ahead of San Diego, Miami, Atlanta, Buffalo, Boston and Baltimore. In 200 cities with populations over 100,000, New York placed 157th on the list, its lowest ranking yet.

During Neighborhood Week, community-sponsored events will take place in all five boroughs with participation from television and movie celebrities, sports stars, business executives, civic leaders and members of the community. This year schoolchildren will paint murals on graffiti-marred walls; teenagers will participate in a basketball tournament for peace; parents will build new community centers for their children; and corporate volunteers will work with neighborhood residents to clean up parks.

Founded in 1975 by Senator Jacob Javits, the Citizens Committee for New York City is a not-for-profit organization aimed at providing grants, self-help publications, training and technical assistance to more than 11,000 volunteer block, neighborhood, youth and civic associations throughout the five boroughs.

Joining the Mayor were Deputy Mayor Rudy Washington, Citizens Committee of New York City President Michael Clark, Citizens Committee of New York City Vice-President Valerie Oliver Durrah, Michelle Kline of Microsoft, Sheryl Miller and Carl Reuter of New York Life and Andrea and Matthew Bass of Chock Full O'Nuts.
