MAYOR GIULIANI CONSIDERS LEGISLATION CREATING "DEWEY ALBERT PLACE" IN BROOKLYN

Remarks by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani at Public Hearing on Local Laws

The next bill before me, Introductory Number 943, sponsored by Council Members Lasher, Fisher and Fusco, along with three of their colleagues, would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Dewey Albert Place" to West 10th Street between Surf Avenue and the Boardwalk.

Dewey Albert was born in New York City and over the course of time became a leading real estate developer and builder in New Jersey. He also built many apartments in the Brighton Beach section of Brooklyn, where he met and married Adeline Weisfeld in 1936.

In 1962, Dewey Albert founded, along with his son Jerome, Astroland Park in Coney Island. In 1975, the Alberts began operation of the world-famous Cyclone Roller Coaster, now a City, State and National landmark. In 1992, Mr. Albert was honored for being a primary force in the regeneration of the Coney Island Amusement area.

Mr. Albert was known for his generosity and hosted charitable events at Astroland Park, including the annual "Community Mayors Day," in which thousands of handicapped children visited the Park as guests of the Community Mayors of New York State; and "Police Anchors," an annual event for the families of police officers killed in the line of duty.

Mr. Albert died in Miami, Florida in 1992 at the age of eighty-four. He was the father of two children, Jerome Albert, and Sheila Kahn. His widow Adeline, died in 1994. In recognition of the work and life of Dewey Albert and in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Cyclone Roller Coaster, this legislation names 10th Street between Surf Avenue and the Boardwalk as "Dewey Albert Place."

I will first turn to the bill's sponsors and then to any other elected official wishing to be heard.

There being no one else to be heard, and for the reasons stated previously, I will now sign this bill.
