MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE DAY; SALUTES 99th ANNIVERSARY OF PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed June 15th "Philippine Independence Day" in New York City and marched in the Philippine Grand Parade on Madison Avenue. The parade celebrates the winning of independence by the Filipino people on June 12th, 1898 and commemorates the growth and heritage of the Filipino community in New York City.

The Mayor presented the proclamation to Ms. Nelia M. Ferrette, Overall Chairman of the organizing commitee for the Eighth Annual Philippine Grand Parade.

"During this century our City's Filipino community has grown rapidly," the Mayor said. "Today this thriving community is served by three weekly newspapers and has risen to levels of prominence and respect throughout all sectors of our City--from public service, business, the arts and entertainment. Filipino-Americans share their rich heritage with all New Yorkers and contribute to every area of the life of our great City."

Ms. Ferrette characterized the Mayor's proclamation and presence at the parade as "a recognition of the Filipino-American community as a unified emerging ethnic group of this city." She also said that the Mayor's participation contributed "to the success of the celebration of the 99th anniversary of the Philippine Independence by the Filipino-American community."

This marks the eighth year in which Filipino-Americans have held the sixteen-block parade down Fifth Avenue from 41st Street to 26th Street.
