MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIP YIELDS

48,638 SUMMER JOBS FOR CITY'S TEENS

YES COMMISSION HELPS DELIVER 9,000 MORE SUMMER JOBS THIS YEAR THAN LAST YEAR

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani announced today that the Youth Empowerment Services Commission (YES) has found 9,000 more summer jobs for youth this year compared to jobs last summer, through a cooperative private and public partnership. The Mayor was joined by Deputy Mayor for Education and Human Services Ninfa Segarra and Bud Konheim, Chair of the YES Commission and CEO of Nicole Miller, at a press conference held at The GAP in Herald Square. The GAP is among the companies that have pledged summer jobs.

"A summer job can start a teenager on the early road to success," Mayor Giuliani said. "I'd like to thank the businesses like The GAP, UPS and Taco Bell, as well as the New York City Partnership and the United Way, which have helped provide more than 7,000 private sector summer jobs for our City's young people and, in doing so, have invested in the future of our City. The jobs will be in many diverse industries including financial firms, chain stores, law firms, hospitals and major cultural and educational institutions. I am confident that these work experiences will provide many opportunities fo young people to learn the skills and discipline necessary to succeed in a working environment," added the Mayor.

"I would especially like to express my appreciation to Bud Konheim who has led the effort to get the private sector involved in job creation this summer," Mayor Giuliani said. "I also want to commend Deputy Mayor Segarra and the hard working members of the YES Commission staff. Their efforts have yielded 7,153 private sector jobs -- an increase of 2,514 over last year's number. To date, we have 48,638 job commitments from both the public and private sectors -- 9,049 jobs more than last year.

Mr. Konheim said, "This is a great investment in our City's future workforce and I am proud to be part of this initiative. At this time, we are still actively seeking job commitments. So I encourage good corporate and business citizens to call us and get involved."

Deputy Mayor Segarra, who coordinated the YES Commission's efforts said, "A first job is a most important experience in a young person's life. And this exciting public-private partnership will provide invaluable experience and open the door of opportunity for more than 48,000 young New Yorkers."

In April, Mayor Giuliani said that YES Commission would provide as many as 37,000 jobs. The Mayor and the City Council have exceeded that expectation by dedicating an additional $3.5 million of City tax levy money to subsidize jobs for 3,500 youth. The New York City Housing Authority has contributed an additional 985 jobs beyond their pledge of 2,000 jobs for this year. The total public effort now stands at 41,485 jobs.

The Commission on Youth Empowerment was created by Mayor Giuliani on March 14, 1996, to coordinate the resources of the public, private and not-for-profit sectors to maximize the youth employment opportunities available in New York City.

Attached is a breakdown of the public/private summer jobs as of June 20, 1997.

The Mayor urged businesses to get involved in this important initiative. Interested businesses should call 212-788-6700 for more information.
