MAYOR GIULIANI WELCOMES VENTURE CAPITAL CONFERENCE TO NEW YORK CITY WITH RECEPTION AT GRACIE MANSION

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani welcomed the 1997 Venture Capital Conference to New York City during a reception this evening at Gracie Mansion. The Conference, which will promote New York City's most successful new companies and offer opportunities for venture capitalists to invest here will take place on Wednesday, July 9th and on Thursday, July 10th at the New York Hilton Hotel.

Joining the Mayor at tonight's reception were Deputy Mayor Randy Levine and President of the Economic Development Corporation Charles Millard.

Mayor Giuliani said, "The Venture Capital Conference will bring together a wide range of industries, as well as venture capitalists from around the country who want to invest in dynamic, growing companies here in New York City. Through successful tax reform, new legislation and common-sense business ideas, we are working hard to enhance the growth of New York City's key industries."

"These strategies are proving to be effective," continued the Mayor. "Thanks to the business leaders, the City, and the Economic Development Corporation under the strong leadership of Charles Millard, the City registered a 41 percent increase in venture capital investment in 1996. I hope that this Conference will be a testament to the City's wide array of opportunities, and more importantly, a concrete step forward in creating new jobs and new markets here."

The Mayor also pointed out that small companies make up 98 percent of the 200,000 businesses currently operating in New York City.

Deputy Mayor Randy Levine said, "Through this Conference, investors will learn about the many benefits of investing in New York City companies. The Giuliani Administration continues to successfully work with the private sector to foster economic growth throughout the City."

EDC President Charles Millard said, "With the current opportunities that are now arising in New York City, we are confident that this event will help venture capitalists and entrepreneurs form critical partnerships. New York City has been revitalized under Mayor Giuliani's leadership and companies are finding an environment conducive to the growth and success of small businesses. "

The Conference is co-sponsored by the City of New York; Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison, LLP, one of the leading law firms in the United States; Coopers & Lybrand, LLP, an international accounting and consulting firm; Prospect Street Investment Management Company, the manager of more than $285 million of institutional capital; and the Strategic Research Institute, a leader in the conference and meeting industry.
