MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS LEGISLATION CREATING "HARRY WARREN WAY" IN BROOKLYN
The final bill before me, Introductory Number 945, sponsored by Council Members Lasher, Fusco, O'Donovan and Abel, would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Harry Warren Way" to Bay 38th Street between Benson Avenue and Bath Avenue, in Brooklyn.
Harry Warren was born on December 24, 1893 in Brooklyn. He was the twelfth child of Marie and Anthony Warren. While in grammar school, he found he had a natural ear for music. Mr. Warren entered the entertainment field at an early age, and is credited with such hits as "I Only Have Eyes for You," and "Chattanooga Choo Choo." He was responsible for all the songs in the musical "42nd Street," and had three songs become Oscar winners. The Harry Warren Theatre, established in 1982 on Bath Avenue at Bay 38th Street, is now home to The Ryan Repertory Company, and stands in memory of his many contributions. In 1981, Mr. Warren died at the age of 87.
In recognition of his life and work it is fitting that Bay 38th Street between Benson Avenue and Bath Avenue be named "Harry Warren Way."
I will first turn to the bill's sponsors and then to any other elected official wishing to be heard.
