MAYOR GIULIANI DELIVERS REMARKS AT SWEARING IN OF BROOKLYN BOROUGH PRESIDENT HOWARD GOLDEN

16th Borough President Is Sworn In For Sixth Term

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today delivered welcoming remarks at the inaugural ceremony of Brooklyn Borough President Howard Golden at Brooklyn Borough Hall. The Mayor joined City officials and Brooklynites to celebrate the start of the Brooklyn Borough President's sixth consecutive four-year term.

"I'm proud to welcome you here today for the inauguration of Howard Golden -- the 16th President of the Borough of Brooklyn," Mayor Giuliani said. "In a public service career that spans more than three decades, Howard Golden continues to distinguish himself as a strong and tenacious leader fighting for the interests of his Borough. Under his steady guidance, Brooklyn has weathered some very difficult moments but has always managed to survive the tough times.

"It is important to remember that one hundred years ago, when Brooklyn became part of Greater New York, some people feared the character, history and unique charm of Brooklyn would be overshadowed by Manhattan. This year, during the Centennial of Greater New York, every New Yorker is very thankful Brooklyn became a flourishing part of New York City, the Capital of the World. And I am pleased that since the last inauguration when the term 'outer borough' was ubiquitous in the City's vernacular, it has now been replaced by a much better, much more fashionable, 'one city, one standard.'

"Thanks to the Borough President's hard work and cooperation, Brooklyn's economy once again thrives with the creation of thousands of new jobs. The revitalization of Downtown Brooklyn has been highlighted by the creation of Renaissance Plaza, the first hotel built in Brooklyn in 50 years; the Atlantic Center; the new Fire Department Headquarters at Metrotech; and many other re-development projects. Howard, congratulations to you and your family and I look forward to working with you in the upcoming years."

As New York City's senior Borough President, Mr. Golden was first sworn in as the 16th President of the Borough of Brooklyn on January 3, 1977. Before becoming Borough President, Mr. Golden represented his Borough in the City Council for seven years. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Golden is a graduate of Stuyvesant High School, New York University and Brooklyn Law School. Mr. Golden served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was present during the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944. He is married to wife, Aileen, and has two daughters.
