MAYOR GIULIANI ANNOUNCES THAT IN 1997 NEW YORK CITY EXPERIENCED ITS STRONGEST YEAR FOR PRIVATE SECTOR JOB GROWTH SINCE 1984

Unemployment Continues To Decline As Job Numbers Grow

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani issued the following statement today regarding the State's report showing continued growth in employment in New York City.

"I am proud to announce today that in 1997 New York City employment was up 48,900 jobs, year-over-year, and added 59,000 since the beginning of the year - the largest creation of new private sector jobs since 1984," said Mayor Giuliani. "In addition, the City's unemployment rate dropped to 8.0 percent in December down from 8.8 percent the prior year. Since 1994 our Administration has created 184,700 private sector jobs -- compared to the loss of over 320,000 jobs in the prior administration."
