MAYOR GIULIANI CALLS ON NEW YORKERS TO ADOPT NEEDY PUPPIES, KITTENS, DOGS AND CATS

Citing the success of the city-wide efforts launched last May during National Pet Adoption Month, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today asked New Yorkers to continue adopting needy puppies, kittens, dogs and cats available at Center for Animal Care and Control (CACC) animal shelters across the City. Joining the Mayor were CACC Executive Director Marilyn Blohm, CACC Director of Adoptions and Volunteer Services Jody Jones and CACC Director of External Affairs Kyle Burkhart. Also present were three dogs and two cats in need of good homes.

"Pets bring unconditional love, loyalty and happiness into our lives, and are a wonderful addition to the right home," Mayor Giuliani said. "It is also important to remember that adopted pets need not only love, but also care and attention. Pet owners must make sure that their pets are properly trained, spayed/neutered, vaccinated and checked by a vet every year to prevent disease. Keeping pets healthy is the best way to show them your love.

"This past May, 987 animals were adopted from CACC shelters throughout the City, including the five puppies and kittens that appeared at our Blue Room press conference. That represented a five percent increase over the month of April. If you think you can provide a good home for a needy pet, I urge you to call the CACC Pet Adoption hotline at 212-722-3620," the Mayor concluded.

Currently, there are 250 cats and 150 dogs — many purebred and trained — available for adoption on a daily basis at CACC shelters. The largest selections of animals can be found in the Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island facilities. An information pet adoption hotline 212-722-3620 is available 24 hours, seven days a week for people seeking information on how to adopt a pet from the CACC and the location of the adoption centers.

Individuals who want to adopt from CACC must comply with a reference check and landlord verification. Adopters must be 18 years old and must pay a fee — $55 for cats/$60 for dogs — that covers spay/neuter procedures, vaccinations, worming, feline leukemia test, microchip ID implanting, and a veterinary check.

Adoption hours are 10 AM through 6 PM, seven days a week, except for the Brooklyn shelter, which is closed on Mondays. For locations of the adoption centers, call the pet adoption hotline at 212-722-3620.
