MAYOR GIULIANI PROCLAIMS GERMAN AMERICAN STEUBEN PARADE DAY

Parade Steps Off On Saturday, September 19th At Noon

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed Saturday, September 19, as German American Steuben Parade Day. Joining the Mayor at a City Hall Park ceremony were Parade Committee Chairman William Hetzler, Department for the Aging Commissioner Herbert Stupp, and 34 visiting groups from Germany.

The parade honors Baron Frederick Wilhelm Von Steuben, who came to this country to lend his heroic support to General George Washington in the struggle for American independence.

"The important contributions of German Americans to government, education, religion and the arts have been instrumental in earning New York City its status as Capital of the World," Mayor Giuliani said. "It is with great pleasure that I present the German American Steuben Parade Day proclamation today, recognizing the contributions of more than 300,000 Americans of German descent who live in our City.

"In the midst of music, and colorful floats and costumes, this parade proudly depicts the history of German Americans and their descendants in the United States, reminding all of us of the accomplishments that people from all German speaking countries have shared with this nation."

The 41st Annual German-American Steuben Parade will take place on Saturday, September 19th at Noon along Fifth Avenue, beginning at 64th Street.
