"Immigration rejuvenates New York City with every generation. It broadens our thinking and brings new life and culture to our City. As the nation celebrates Citizenship Day, the City salutes the many immigrants who have made the country stronger and re-enforced the values inherent in the Constitution through their hard work and creativity.
"The exhibit by immigrant artists reinforces how profoundly immigrants enrich the City of New York," the Mayor added. "Now through October 16, New Yorkers can view art works about the City seen through the eyes of 34 first generation artists who have come from 21 countries. In every piece, we can see the artists' energy, their courage, their love of home and country, and their passion for New York. As the City celebrates its momentous centennial consolidation, the exhibit adds a special perspective from newcomers who celebrate the City through their art," the Mayor concluded.
Immigrant Affairs Executive Director Angelica O. Tang said, "The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs and Language Services is pleased to celebrate immigrants, the arts and New York City in the New American Art Show. We are especially proud of opening the show in commemoration of Citizenship Day on September 17."
The New American Art Show is a free art exhibit. It can be viewed at the Tweed Gallery, located in the Tweed Courthouse at 52 Chambers Street, near Centre Street in City Hall Park, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday through October 16, 1998.
