MAYOR GIULIANI CELEBRATES WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH AND INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Honors the Women of the United Nations Consular Corps

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani today proclaimed the month of March as Women's History Month in New York City. Joining the Mayor were Amalia Betanzos, Chair of the New York City Commission on the Status of Women and Irene Halligan, Director of the New York City Commission for the United Nations Consular Corps and Protocol. The Mayor also recognized the International Women's Day observance honoring the accomplishments of the remarkable women members of the United Nations Consular Corps.

"The Consuls General represent the best that their countries can offer as guests in our great City," Mayor Giuliani said. "These women have dedicated their lives to protect their fellow citizens and to represent and communicate the spirit of their countries and its traditions. Their dedication strengthens the bonds between our nations, all of which converge in New York City, making us the Capital of the World. I salute their message of good will, integrity and commitment to service.

"Women's History Month and the International Women's Day are a celebration of women of all ages, races, cultures and ethnic traditions, and their contributions to history. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I want to recognize the essential and invaluable women who built, shaped and developed the history of this nation," the Mayor concluded.

Recognizing women whose groundbreaking achievements have advanced the lives of all Americans and enhanced the role of women in their respective fields of expertise, this year the Commission on the Status of Women honored the Mesdames Consuls General who serve their countries at the United Nations. They are:

Women's History Month is celebrated each March to acknowledge the vital contributions of women of all ages, races and cultures to our history.
