MAYOR GIULIANI'S STATEMENT ON CARDINAL O'CONNOR

"Cardinal O'Connor has made enormous contributions to New York. I think people know of his contributions as a religious and moral leader. But many people don't completely understand the work that he's done to take care of poor people, sick people, and in particular, the work that he's done to take care of people with AIDS. The Catholic hospital system and the system of Catholic charities take some of the most difficult and painful cases, offering compassionate and professional care. Their dedication reflects the Cardinal's commitment to all New Yorkers.

Cardinal O'Connor has provided and continues to provide comfort and guidance to New Yorkers during difficult times and he will continue to be an influential voice in New York City in the future. I am not going to react as if he's leaving because that is not a certainty. He's gotten extensions before and I hope that the Pope extends him again."
