MAYOR GIULIANI RELEASED THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT REGARDING WAYNE GRETZKY'S DECISION TO RETIRE FROM THE NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE:

"Wayne Gretzky is the greatest professional hockey player in the history of hockey and deserving of his title, The Great One. After 20 years in the National Hockey League and the last three with the New York Rangers, Wayne has elevated hockey to a new level and has shown what a great sportsman he is on and off the ice. Now, when you think sports legends, include Gretzky among the very best of all time. The name Wayne Gretzky has become synonymous with great sportsmanship and I join the millions of New Yorkers and hockey fans around the world in wishing Wayne well in his retirement and thank him for 20 years of excitement on the ice."
