MAYOR GIULIANI HOSTS ANNUAL SALUTE TO ISRAEL PARADE RECEPTION AT GRACIE MANSION

Parade to Celebrate the 51st Anniversary of the Founding of the State of Israel

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani tonight hosted his annual reception in honor of the Salute to Israel Parade at Gracie Mansion. The annual Parade, which this year celebrates Israel's 51st anniversary, highlights Israel's remarkable achievements since its founding and honors the State of Israel's independence.

Joining the Mayor at Gracie Mansion were Consumer Affairs Commissioner Jules Polonetsky; Ambassador Shmuel Sisso, Consul of the State of Israel; Judy Kaufthal, President of the Israel Tribute Committee; and distinguished members of the Jewish community.

"Over the last fifty one years, Israel has faced challenge after challenge to its existence and security," Mayor Giuliani said. "But it has withstood those challenges and it has triumphed beyond them. This is a testament to its people and to the State of Israel, which have not been intimidated. Instead, as a nation, Israel has come a remarkable distance, becoming a leader in many fields. New York City is proud to have stood by Israel for more than a half century."

"The accomplishments of Jewish immigrants over the last century and a half have played an important part in the evolution of our culture and economy," the Mayor continued. "It's just impossible to imagine this City or this country without the moral, spiritual, economic, and cultural contributions of millions of immigrants and their descendants who have enriched American life. Today, as we reflect over the last fifty one years of the State of Israel and look forward to the new Millennium, I hope we learn to keep this relationship strong, and to enable Israel to progress even more."

The Salute to Israel Parade, a project of the Israel Tribute Committee, Inc., is the largest single gathering in the world in support of Israel. Since 1964, the Salute to Israel Parade has showcased Jewish-American traditions and celebrated the existence of the State of Israel. More than 75,000 marchers, 35 marching bands, and 30 professionally designed floats will take part in the celebration. The theme of this year's Parade is The Importance of One, the Impact of One. The Parade will be held on May 9th at noon, beginning at 57th Street, proceeding up 5th Avenue and concluding at 79th Street.

For the sixth straight year, the Mayor will serve as Honorary Grand Marshal of the Parade.
