MAYOR GIULIANI AND FIRE COMMISSIONER VON ESSEN DEDICATE PLAQUE IN MEMORY OF FIREFIGHTER RAYMOND NAKOVICS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Fire Commissioner Thomas Von Essen today dedicated a plaque honoring the memory of Firefighter Raymond Nakovics, who died of a heart attack on April 29, 1998 while batting a second-alarm fire at 340 West 55th Street in Manhattan. The plaque was unveiled at Engine Company 39 at 157 East 67th Street, where Firefighter Nakovics -- a 27-year veteran of the Department - was assigned at the time of his death.

"Prior to becoming a Firefighter, Ray had firsthand knowledge of what a dangerous profession he had chosen to enter - after all, his father fought fires for two decades before retiring from the New York City Fire Department in 1960," the Mayor said. "But Ray had demonstrated the depth of his courage long before joining the Fire Department. A decorated Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he immediately distinguished himself as a Firefighter. His passion for the job and level of dedication for serving his fellow New Yorkers was inspirational. This plaque will serve as an everlasting reminder of that passion and dedication as Firefighters in this Company and throughout the City draw strength from Ray's heroic example. "

Joining the Mayor and Fire Commissioner at the plaque dedication were members of Firefighter Nakovics' family, including his wife Susan, daughters Lisa, Jennifer and Heather, and their son, Christopher.

Fire Commissioner Von Essen said, "Twenty nine years ago, Ray followed in the footsteps of his father, a 20-year decorated veteran of the Department, and took on the job they both loved - protecting the lives and property of all New Yorkers. This plaque will serve as an inspiration to scores of young firefighters who will come to work in Engine 39. Although Ray is no longer with us, his memory and this plaque will continue to encourage and inspire young firefighters for years to come."

Firefighter Nakovics joined the Department on September 5, 1970 and worked his entire career at Engine Co. 39. During the course of his career, Firefighter Nakovics was cited for bravery three times, and while in the US Army, was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. His father, John, was appointed to the New York City Fire Department on July 1, 1939 and retired on July 15, 1960.
