MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT ADDS THE NAME "REVEREND WESLEY G. JANZEN PLACE" TO THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE INTERSECTION OF WHITE PLAINS ROAD AND GLEASON AVENUE IN THE BRONX

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The next bill before me today is Introductory Number 397, sponsored by Council Members Cruz, Foster and Rivera, which would add the name "Reverend Wesley G. Janzen Place" to the northeast corner of the intersection of White Plains Road and Gleason Avenue in the Bronx.

Reverend Wesley G. Janzen was born in Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada on August 21, 1941 to parents who were United States citizens then living in Canada. In 1961, Wesley enrolled at the Eastern Pentecostal Bible College in Petersborough, Ontario, where he graduated as an ordained Minister in 1964. In 1970, Reverend Janzen came to the United States and became Pastor of the Scottsdale First Assembly of God, in Pennsylvania. While there, he stabilized the church's finances by paying off the mortgage and holding fundraisers to build a Christian Education Building. In 1976, Reverend Janzen became Pastor of the Grace Pentecostal Church in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where he would remain for the next ten years.

In 1986, Reverend Janzen became Minister at the Church of the Revelation in the Bronx. Through his dedicated work and service, attendance at worship services increased tremendously. Reverend Janzen received many commendations for his work at the Church and for the ministries he created to address the needs of children and members of the community. Reverend Wesley G. Janzen passed away on April 12, 1998.

In view of Reverend Janzen's many years of dedicated service to his church and community, it is fitting that the northeast corner at the intersection of White Plains Road and Gleason Avenue, where the church was located, be named "Reverend Wesley G. Janzen Place."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
