MAYOR GIULIANI AND CORRECTION COMMISSIONER KERIK PRESIDE AT GRADUATION CEREMONY FOR 132 CORRECTION OFFICERS

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Department of Correction Commissioner Bernard B. Kerik today presided over the graduation ceremony for 132 probationary Correction Officers. Also during the ceremony, held at John Jay College in Manhattan, the Mayor and Commissioner Kerik administered the oath of office to the newly appointed Bureau Chief Robert Davoren, Assistant Chief William T. Hurley, Deputy Warden Nadine Felton and Deputy Warden Patrick Walsh.

"The career you have chosen is tough, demanding and sometimes even thankless," Mayor Giuliani said. "It is the work you do each and every day behind the scenes that makes all the difference.

"Without the commitment of our City's Correction Officers, we could never have turned the City around the way we have. New York City has the hardest working and most professional Correction Officers in the nation. I am proud to join Commissioner Kerik in welcoming the new officers to the Department of Correction and in congratulating the officers who have advanced their careers with hard work and dedication," the Mayor added.

Commissioner Kerik said, "Under the Mayor's vigorous leadership, the Department of Correction has been recognized as a full partner in the City's criminal justice system. That recognition helped us to achieve the most significant reductions in violence in the jails in recent history. I am confident that your commitment and dedication will make our City proud."

Today's graduates completed a rigorous 12 week training program at the Correction Academy in Queens.
