MAYOR GIULIANI SIGNS BILL THAT ADDS THE NAME "MARINE CORPS BOULEVARD" TO ONTARIO AVENUE BETWEEN VICTORY BOULEVARD AND LITTLE CLOVE ROAD, IN STATEN ISLAND

-Remarks By Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani At Public Hearing On Local Laws-

The first bill before me, Introductory Number 535, is sponsored by Council Members O'Donovan, Fiala, Golden, Oddo and four of their colleagues. This bill would add, through the posting of an additional sign, the name "Marine Corps Boulevard" to Ontario Avenue between Victory Boulevard and Little Clove Road, in Staten Island.

The Staten Island Marine Corps League Detachment Number 246 is in its 53rd year as an active detachment and is soon to be in its 50th year at its current location on Ontario Avenue. The Detachment continues in the tradition of the United States Marine Corps dating back to the Continental Congress which passed a resolution in 1775 establishing the Continental Marine Corps. Throughout its history, the Corps has participated in every war and conflict involving our nation.

As part of its community service, the Detachment supports and participates in a number of worthwhile activities including, the Toys for Tots program, the Cancer Fund, the Heart Fund and the Boy Scouts of America. Each month, members visit the Veterans Hospital and render assistance to all Marines whether they are retired or active.

Therefore, in view of the contributions that the Marine Corps has made to our City and our Country, it is fitting that Ontario Avenue between Victory Boulevard and Little Clove Road be named "Marine Corps Boulevard."

For the reasons previously stated, I will now sign the bill.
